Deciduous forests have various animals. These are only a few of them and different facts included.

American Bald Eagle

  • These are birds of prey, they like to sit on high perch near water to make it easier to spot their prey.
    • There  diet is made up of mainly fish, but also include small sea birds, mammals and reptiles (mostly turtles).

    • The Bald eagle generally lives 45 to 50 years in captivity and 25 years in the wild. This means the Bald eagle lives about 70 year.

      Coyote
      • When coyotes move into a place, they easily upset the balance of that place. They can kill the population of the small mammals in a few years.
        • When there is lots of prey around, coyotes will hunt alone or in breeding pairs. They eat mainly small mammals like rabbits and mice, reptiles, fruits, and insects.
        • Coyotes become mature in 1 to 2 years and have about 2 to 12 puppies but usually 6.

          Duckbill Platypus
          • Platypus lives along steams and river beds.
          • Platypus is a carnmivore, it eats frog, shrimp, larvae, fish, and tadpoles. It drives to the bottom of the river and wiggles its bill in the sand and mud in the bottom.

            European Read Squirrel
            • The red squirrel mostly feeds on seeds. They consume acorns , hazelnuts, chestnuts and beech flowers.
            • The red squirrel, like many others, is a rodent. They have strong teeth made to open pine cones and seeds. They have 4 toes on each foot with long, sharp claws to help it grab bark when climbing trees.

              White Tailed Deer
              • The fur of the white-tailed dear is a grayish colour in the winter then more red comes out during the summer.

              • These animals live mostly in southern Canada.

              • The deer is mostly active at night but it can be active any time. It will usually feed just before dawn for several hours and again from late afternoon until dusk.
